2023Enamelware, water, light, wood Installed at the Museum at Texas Tech University, Lubbock TXGrappling with the problem of return upon departing the field portion of the Land Arts program, and pondering Ann Reynold’s eponymous essay, I created an installation that provided a visual represenation of memory and site. Within the Texas Tech University art gallery, I displayed blue enamel vessels of varying diameters embedded in a platform, and filled with water. While in the field, the most basic needs, like water, sleep, food, become markers of duration. It was important to me that water be present in this installation, offering a tangible representation of time. The layout of the vessels corresponded to the locations of sites visited during the program, and the diameter of the containers correlated to the number of days spent at each environment. Using parallel light rays to mimic the force of the sun, I bounced the light off of the water, casting reflections onto the gallery wall itself. Creating a ghost of these vessels, which themselves are physical manifestations of memories of place, succeeded in honoring the sense of loss that is inherent to the experience of site-specificity. Using the fingerprint created at the Mimbres River in New Mexico, I unfurled the tape and digititally scanned the entire length, creating a composite image which was then printed on vellum. Transcribing the fingerprint into a scanned, two-dimensional file, then constructing an artist book to contain the physical form, to eventually providing it as a visual score to be performed by musicians was a practice in formal rendering and creative collaboration.&nbsp; Having created the visual score, I collaborated with artists Lula Asplund and Naomi Harrison-Clay of Junior Mint Prince to perform the fingerprint score and create a musical composition, suplimented with field recordings I collected from the site. Installed at Mills College at Northeastern University, Oakland CA Inspired by Nancy Holt’s 1972 site-specific art installation, Missoula Ranch Locators, these land lenses were designed with the intention of calling viewers outside of the gallery space and into nature. Working collaboratively with an existing site that had been negelected and long-forgotten, the artist hand-built fixtures that could attach to spikes of rebar and would achieve a focusing effect on the surrounding landscape. Following in Holt’s philosophy that nature itself was too vast to experience in a glance, these lenses direct the participators’ attention to morsels of the grandeur.&nbsp; <img width="4000" process and labor can reveal as much if not more than the finished object. I create Fingerprints as tools to exercise my ability to situate myself within an environment, as well as a way to create a record or impression of that site physically, without relying on the camera as a mediator. Utilizing fairly accessible materials, in this case packing tape and time, I am able to relieve myself of the burden of preciousness. My goal is to simply find my way in an environment, unravel the tape, make contact between the adhesive and the environment, and then leave it to collect what it will. At the culmination of the process, I steadily re-roll the tape onto itself, bringing along the minute particles that make up the site. In this way, I am effectively making a scan of the landscape, making a photograph. Rather than capturing and freezing a moment in time, Fingerprints allow the landscape to become a participant in its own recording, a partner in the creation of my memory. My desire is not to contain a site into a stagnant image, but rather to transcribe its own materials into a form that is recognizable, yet transformed. While the Fingerprints exist as objects, and the performance of their creation is documented via film photography, the crux of the work is in the practice and labor of carrying out these small interventions. Tunnels during the vernal equinox. The temperatures dropped every night to the single digits and our only company was the herd of cattle, many mothers with freshly birthed young. Rather than producing images of the tunnels themselves, I chose to photograph the surrounding landscape in an attempt to patch together a clearer understanding of how Nancy might have perceived the site prior to the construction of the Tunnels.&nbsp;
